Smoking - the health effects
|
Smoking is a greater cause of death and
disability than any single disease, says the World
Health Organisation
According to their figures, it is responsible for
approximately five million deaths worldwide every
year.
Tobacco smoking is a known or probable cause of
approximately 25 diseases, and even the WHO says
that its impact on world health is not fully
assessed. Smoking damage
The components of cigarette smoke collectively
explain its health impacts. Smoke contains over
4,000 chemicals. Nicotine is the predominant
addictive chemical and the reason why smokers
continue to smoke.
Heart attack and stroke
UK studies show that smokers in their 30s and 40s
are five times more likely to have a heart attack
than non-smokers.
Tobacco contributes to the hardening of the
arteries, which can then become blocked and starve
the heart of blood flow, causing the attack.
Often, smokers who develop this will require complex
and risky heart bypass surgery.
If you smoke for a lifetime, there is a 50% chance
that your eventual death will be smoking-related -
half of all these deaths will be in middle age.
Smoking also increases the risk of having a stroke.
Lung problems
Another primary health risk associated with smoking
are lung cancer, which kills more than 20,000 people
in the UK every year.
US studies have shown that men who smoke increase
their chances of dying from the disease by more than
22 times. Women who smoke increase this risk by
nearly 12 times. Lung cancer is a difficult cancer
to treat - long term survival rates are poor.
Smoking also increases the risk of oral, uterine,
liver, kidney, bladder, stomach, and cervical
cancers, and leukaemia.
Another health problem associated with tobacco is
emphysema, which, when combined with chronic
bronchitis, produces chronic obstructive pulmonary
disease. The lung damage which causes emphysema is
irreversible, and makes it extremely difficult to
breathe.
Harm to children
Smoking in pregnancy greatly increases the risk of
miscarriage, is associated with lower birthweight
babies, and inhibited child development. Smoking by
parents following the birth is linked to sudden
infant death syndrome, or cot death, and higher
rates of infant respiratory illness, such as
bronchitis, colds, and pneumonia. Nicotine, an
ingredient of tobacco, is listed as an addictive
substance by the US authorities.
Although the health risks of smoking are cumulative,
giving up can yield health benefits regardless of
the age of the patient, or the length of time they
have been smoking.
Smoking and young people
Smoking is particularly damaging in young people.
Evidence shows people who start smoking in their
youth - aged 11 to 15 - are three times more likely
to die a premature death than someone who takes up
smoking at the age of 20.
They are also more likely to be hooked for life.
Future impact
By 2020, the WHO expects the worldwide death toll to
reach 10 million, causing 17.7% of all deaths in
developed countries. There are believed to be 1.1
billion smokers in the world, 800 million of them in
developing countries.

The Pakistan Army came into being as a
result of the amalgamation of the Muslim
troops of the pre-independence British
Indian Army. The origin of many of its
units dates back to the beginning of the
British rule in the subcontinent. This
relation, however, is merely of
historical nature. With the birth of
Pakistan, a hotchpotch of the
ill-equipped and ill-organized troops,
breaking away from the old and
established British Indian Army, had
been transformed into a disciplined
fighting force in consonance with the
national ideals and aspirations.

Oh,!
I Made a Mistake
Assalam-O-Alaikum
Hope you all are hale and hearty and enjoying the blossoming
of spring flowers around you.
Let me start off today with a story. Sarah and Tania were
class fellows. They both had good command over English
language so when annual speech competition was announced in
their school, their teacher asked them to participate in it.
Sarah readily agreed but Tania was hesitant. She was afraid
what if she made a mistake. She stayed in stress for days
thinking if or not to take part in the annual school debate
competition. Finally the date for submission of participants
names passed and Tania didn’t take part. On the debate
competition day, Sarah competed with enthusiasm. Though her
speech’s context was good but she didn’t win because she
made a mistake- she did not keep the required eye contact
with the audience. Tania said, “See, I knew we couldn’t make
it. That’s why I stayed out of it.” But Sarah replied, “I am
happy to have availed the opportunity. I realize the mistake
I made. I have gained an experience and will avoid repeating
the mistake I made this time ” . Next year too, Sarah
participated in the annual contest and she was better this
year. She kept on trying and though she did make mistakes
but she learnt from them and tried to avoid them next time.
In few years time, her name came among the top three orators
of the school. When she was in her final year, she was the
sole contestant who participated in inter-school debate
competition held in her city and was announced the runner
up.
The reason for relating the above story to you, dear
friends, is to point out that one must not let the fear of
making mistake deter from venturing. One must avail the
opportunities that come along the way for often the
opportunity knocks but once. The way to avoid mistakes is
experience. The way to get experience is mistakes.
Everyone makes mistakes. They are, a part of life, an
inevitable fact of life. However people differ in their
approach to mistakes they make. Some use the experience to
devalue themselves. Others recognize that a mistake was made
and admit the error. They develop a strategy to change the
mistake and not do the same thing again. In reality, they
learn from their mistakes. We must wipe out the idea that
“Mistakes are bad”. Missing out an oppuritnity or shying
away from taking a chance is bad. The more mistakes one
makes, the more he/she learns. The more knowledge you gain,
the more you grow and the more likely is you chance of
becoming a bright star in the sky of the future.
So go ahead and take the chance offered. If you commit an
error…turn your mistake into learning opportunities. Good
Luck!
