7 Tips for a
Healthier Ramadan
Eat
Suhur
The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him,
highly recommend eating this pre-dawn meal before a day of
fasting. While you may want to pass to catch some more
sleep, remember that you can always take a catnap while
you're fasting, but you won't be able to eat or drink. To
make it easier, set out utensils and dry food on the table
before going to bed so you can quickly eat and go back to
sleep after Suhur.
Limit fat intake
That's right, limit it, don't cut it out. Otherwise,
you'll have to get rid of what's considered "traditional"
Iftar food in most Muslim cultures. If you're not sure what
kind of food is being referred to, think fried, greasy
and/or super sweet
Follow the Prophet's golden rule of one-third
This especially needs to be said in Ramadan. We should
strive to have no more than one-third food, one-third liquid
and one-third air in our stomachs when eating.
Encourage dip-dunking
Fruits and vegetables get left to the wayside during
regular days, let alone at Iftar time. But you can whip out
those carrot sticks if you've got some tasty dips to eat
them with. Check out some
healthy recipes.
Walk after Iftar
Before you fall over from exhaustion after Iftar and
dinner, take a short walk around the block or just around
your building. The change of environment and exposure to
fresh air may just wake you up in time to go for the next
activity listed below.
Pray Tarawih
More great exercise, not to mention a wonderful way to
build concentration, stamina and brotherhood/sisterhood.
Take a short afternoon nap
Experts say you don't need more than a 15-minute siesta
to really refresh you. During lunch hour, find a quiet spot,
set the alarm on your watch/cell phone and nap. This can
help your body adjust to the daily Ramadan schedule that
requires early waking for Suhur.

Allo Samosa |
Samosa is a
fovourite tea time snack. The pastry is made from flour and
fat and is filled with a mixture of potatoes and spices.
Other vegetables can be added to potato mixture.
Ingredients:
2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon salt,
4 tablespoons ghee or oil
4 tablespoon water,
4-5 medium potatoes, boiled in their jacket
4 tablespoon oil
1 medium onion, finely chopped
1 cup peas, shelled
1 tablespoon ginger, finely chopped
3 tablespoon coriander, fresh, chopped
3 tablespoon water
1.5 teaspoon salt
1 - green chilies fine chopped
1 teaspoon coriander seeds, ground
1 teaspoon garam masala
1 teaspoon cumin seeds roasted & ground
1 teaspoon chilli powder
2 tablespoon lemon juice
- - oil for deep frying
How to Cook:
1. Sift the flour and salt into a bowl. Add the 4
tablespoons on oil and rub it in with your fingers until the
mixture resembles coarse breadcrumbs.
2. Slowly add about 4 tablespoons water- or a tiny bit more
-- and gather the dough into a stiff ball.
3. Empty the ball out on to clean work surface. Knead the
dough for about 10 minutes or until it is smooth. Make a
ball. Rub the ball with about 1/4 teaspoon oil and slip it
into a plastic bag. Set aside for 30 minutes or longer.
4. Make the stuffing. Peel the potatoes and cut them into
1/4 inch dice.
5. Heat 4 tablespoons oil in a large frying pan over a
medium flame. When hot, add the onion. Stir and fry until
soft but not brown. Add the peas, ginger, green chilli,
fresh coriander (cilantro), and 3 tablespoons water. Cover,
lower heat and simmer until peas are cooked. Stir and add a
little more water if the frying pan seems to dry out.
6. Add the diced potatoes, salt, coriander seeds, garam
masala, roasted cumin, chilli powder and lemon juice. Stir
gently to mix. Adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper.
Turn off the heat and allow the mixture to cool.
7. Knead the pastry dough again and divide it into six
balls. Keep 5 covered while you work with the sixth.
8. Roll this ball out into a 7 inch (18 cm) round. Cut it
into half with a sharp, pointed knife. Pick up one half and
form a cone, making a 1/4 inch wide (5 mm), overlapping
seam. Glue this seam together with a little water. Fill the
cone with about 2 1/2 tablespoons of the potato mixture.
Close the top of the cone by sticking the open edges
together with a little water. Again, your seam should be
about 1/4 inch (5 mm) wide. Press the top seam down with the
prongs of a fork or flute it with your fingers. Make another
samosa from other half. Make 12 more samosas.
Heat about 2 to 3 inches of oil in a karahi for deep frying
over a medium-low flame. You may use a small, deep, frying
pan for frying. When the oil is medium hot, put in as many
samosas as the pan will hold in a single layer. Fry slowly,
turning the samosas frequently until they are golden brown
and crisp. Drain on paper towel and serve hot.
Note:
Ready made pastry wrap can be purchased from supermarket or
oriental stores.
This recipe serves 6 people.
Preparation Time: 30 minutes.
Cooking Time: 15 minutes.
Serving Options:
Serve Hot

'Simple'
endometriosis test
hope
As well
as causing pain and discomfort, it can also lead to
infertility
|
Scientists have
developed a quick and simple way to
diagnose endometriosis, without
requiring surgery.
All that is needed is a
small sample of womb lining, taken in a
similar way to a smear test, that can be
checked for the presence of nerve fibres. According to the Human
Reproduction journal, this can predict
with nearly 100% accuracy the
condition's presence.
Endometriosis is a
common problem where cells that usually
line the womb are found elsewhere in the
body.
It affects about two
million women in the UK, most of whom
are diagnosed between the ages of 25 and
40.
As well as causing pain
and discomfort, it can also lead to
infertility.
Conventionally, doctors
use laparoscopy to diagnose
endometriosis.
This involves the woman
being booked into hospital for the
invasive "keyhole" surgical procedure
carried out under general anaesthetic. Laparoscopy itself can
be associated with complications and can
harm a woman's fertility.
In contrast, an
endometrial biopsy requires no surgery
and is relatively quick and easy to
perform in a clinic setting with the
woman fully conscious.
Non-invasive test
In a trial involving 99
women with pelvic pain, the test
accurately spotted 63 out of 64 cases of
endometriosis.
It correctly identified
29 out of the 34 women with no signs of
endometriosis upon laparoscopy.
In the remaining six
women found to have nerves in their
biopsy samples, one had a previous
history of endometriosis and another had
physical signs that were considered too
slight to be endometriosis.
Lead researcher Dr
Moamar Al-Jefout of Mu'tah University in
Jordan said: "This test is probably as
accurate as assessment via laparoscopy,
the current gold standard, especially as
it is unclear how often endometriosis is
overlooked, even by experienced
gynaecologists.
"Endometrial biopsy is
clearly less invasive than laparoscopy,
and this test could help to reduce the
current lengthy delay in diagnosis of
the condition, as well as allowing more
effective planning for formal surgical
or long-term medical management."
Professor David Healy,
president-elect of the International
Federation of Fertility Societies, said
the new simple test to diagnose
endometriosis was very exciting.
"If other doctors can
confirm this test, this might become the
standard way of diagnosing
endometriosis. This would mean that the
condition could be identified earlier,
which could give real benefits for
infertile women," he said.
Nemone Warner, head of
external relations at Endometriosis UK,
said women would benefit from earlier
diagnosis without the risk of surgical
complications.
Mr Chris Mann,
gynaecology expert and spokesman for the
Endometriosis SHE Trust, said the
findings were promising but larger
trials were needed to prove the test's
worth.
He said it would not
replace the role of laparoscopy, which
is useful for determining disease
severity, but could be a useful
addition.

RAMADAN,
Marhaba
Assalam-O-Alaikum
Happy Ramadan to Muslims all over the world.
Ramadan-the month of blessings has come. It is in this month
in which the spirit of Islam blossoms to its absolute best.
As this month sets in, feelings of joy, peace and
spirituality seem to prevail in air. It is the month of
kindness and good deeds. An unexplainable aura of
spirituality fills the air that excites Muslims to perform
virtuous deeds.
The Messenger of Allah (Sall Allaho alaihe wasallam)
addressed his companions on the last day of Sha`ban, saying,
"O people! A great month has come over you; a blessed month;
a month in which is a night better than a thousand months; a
month in which Allah has made it compulsory upon you to fast
by day, and voluntary to pray by night. Whoever draws nearer
(to Allah) by performing any of the (optional) good deeds
(in this month) shall receive the same reward as performing
an obligatory deed at any other time, and whoever discharges
an obligatory deed (in this month) shall receive the reward
of performing seventy obligations at any other time…”
In Ramadan, Muslims fast as fasting is made compulsory
during this month. When we Muslims, abstain from food in
spite of thirst and hunger, it makes us sympathize with
those who are less fortunate than us…those who seldom have
anything to eat. This month teaches us patience, and the
reward for patience is heaven. We are told to control our
hunger and thirst. By self restraining ourselves, we get
trained to avoid indulgence in prohibited activities. It is
the month of charity. It is narrated by Ibn Khuzaimah that
whoever gives food to a fasting person to break his fast,
shall have his sins forgiven, and he will be saved from the
Fire of Hell, and he shall have the same reward as the
fasting person, without his reward being diminished at all.
In order to gain maximum reward, affording Muslims extend
their hands generously to help the poor and needy.
Ramadan is the month of mercy, forgiveness and freedom from
the hellfire. So much blessed is this month that it would be
a loss indeed to miss it and let it pass by like any other
month.
If we come to know of some opportunity, we plan ahead to
make full use of it, we race to capitalize it. Likewise,
Ramadan with all its treasures of blessings being showered
each day and each moment is here. To gain maximum benefit
from this month, we must make effort, plan our time in such
a way as to avail its every moment.
So as the month of Ramadan sets in and the doors of the
heavens open, be ready to receive the heavenly blessings
from above.
Wish you all a blessed Ramadan, Till next time, Allah Hafiz
