- 4-5 wood mushroom
- 1\4 cup sliced
bean curd, well drained
- 1/2 cup canned bamboo shoots, drained
- 6 cups fresh chicken stock
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1\4 cup soy sauce
- 1\2 cup ground chicken
1/4 tsp. white pepper
- 1 tbsp. chili sauce
- 2 tbsp. white vinegar
- 1\4 cup corn flour
1 egg, beaten

1. Soak the mushroom in warm water for 15-20 minutes or until soft. Strain mushroom liquid and reserve. Cut the mushrooms into thin strips, about 1 inch long, set aside.
2. Slice bean curd and cut bamboo shoots into 1 inch long sticks and set aside.
3. Place the chicken stock in a large pot and bring to boil. Add the salt, soy sauce, mushroom liquid, mushrooms, bamboo shoots and ground chicken and stir well. Lower  the  heat and simmer soup for 3-5  minutes.
4. Add the white pepper, chili sauce, vinegar, and bean curd, stir gently.
Mix the corn flour and little water to make a smooth paste. Stirring all the time, add the paste to the boiling soup in a thin stream. Pour in the egg and stir until it separates into shreds. Add salt and pepper to taste.
Serve: 6

Place 1/2 apple in the cake box or, a slice of fresh bread fastened with toothpicks to the cut edge of a cake will keep the cake from drying out and getting stale

Low-fat, Mediterranean and low-carb diets 'help heart' Atherosclerosis in carotid artery

Three diets - Mediterranean, low-fat and low-carbohydrate - are equally effective in helping reverse blocked arteries, say Israeli researchers.

The study of 140 people, reported in the journal Circulation, found diet could reduce the fatty build up in arteries.

The Ben-Gurion University team found that by the end of the two-year study, the arterial wall had been cut by 5%.
Experts said the study was interesting, but diet was not a "magic bullet". Atherosclerosis is a progressive condition in which the arteries thicken with fatty deposits, increasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

The authors of this Israeli study, which was carried out in collaboration with researchers in the US, Canada and Germany, set out to see if this natural part of ageing can be reversed through diet.
Volunteers followed one of three diets - a low-fat diet, a low-carbohydrate diet or a Mediterranean diet, which is based on eating lots of fruit and vegetables, and using olive oil as the main source of fat.

They were asked to stick to the diet for two years, and record what they ate in food diaries. The study was carried out among overweight volunteers, mostly men, who were aged 40 to 65.

Using three-dimensional imaging, the researchers measured the volume of the wall of the carotid artery, the large artery in the neck which takes blood up to the brain. This was done at the start of the study and again after two years.

Clogged arteries
Lead researcher Iris Shai said: "It was very interesting to see that these very different diets had a similar effect.

"Some people suggest that low-carbohydrate diets are more likely to clog arteries, but we did not see that."
The research paper suggested the link could be related to falling blood pressure caused by the change in diet.

The findings were welcomed by UK experts. Dr Charles Knight, secretary of the British Cardiovascular Society and a consultant cardiologist, said although the study was "relatively small" and was not able to follow through to find out how many people eventually had heart attacks or strokes, the results were nevertheless "very interesting".

He pointed out that the study adds weight to the growing body of research that suggests that atherosclerosis is a modifiable disease.

Ten to 15 years ago, it was thought that fatty build-up in the arteries was irreversible, but since then drugs trials have shown that it is possible for fatty deposits to be cut.

"This study shows you can do something to reduce plaque build-up, even without pills," Dr Knight said.
"It sends an effective message from a public health perspective."

However, he warned that the scale of reduction in the volume of artery walls was relatively small and that changing diet, although helpful, was "no magic bullet".

 A Better Way  
Hope you all are enjoying the upcoming spring season.
On this 23rd March, we, as a nation will be celebrating the Pakistan Resolution Day. Each year, the 23rd of March invokes the memory of our forefathers' epic struggle for independence. It reminds us of the historical resolution that was passed in 1940 in the annual session of the Muslim league, held in Lahore. The resolution passed demanded for a separate homeland for the Muslims of the subcontinent. The Lahore Resolution was indeed a landmark because it set out the goal for the Muslims of India. Before this, they had no goal and no future in view and Muslim politics remained in the hands of the individuals with conflicting interests and inclinations. As soon as Lahore Resolution was passed by the Muslim League, the Hindu press started criticizing the Muslim League and declared this resolution as Pakistan Resolution. In a short span of seven years of their struggle, the Muslims of Indo-Pak Subcontinent finally succeeded in getting Pakistan, on 14th of August, 1947. The dream of Mohammad Ali Jinnah and thousands of other Muslim workers came true on this day. Hence, every year on 23rd of March, the country celebrates this day with great joy and enthusiasm.
However, this day shall not be spent only in watching the military parade or lazing in the couch and watching TV. As we rejoice in remembrance of this landmark event, we should not neglect our obligations to our country and national. A good way to spend this public holiday is to do some work for public interest. Perhaps, we can collect a few friends and go to nearby public park that has been so neglected for sometimes. We can do some trimming of greens there and clean the place so visitors can start using it again. Another way can be to hold a charity show in which the children can put up some performance, sing patriotic songs. Not necessarily to have these shows on large scale. You can have them in your lawn on a small scale by just inviting your neighbors and few relatives. Those who have culinary skills can do some baking and sell the stuff to donate the money to some orphanage.
Folks, these are just some of the ideas. There are plenty more. Just wrack your brains, come up with an idea and do it. Doing public service is a much better way to celebrate our national days then going around in silencer-less bikes, or wheeling or other such ruthless activities that risk not only our lives but of others too.
