Chicken Cholay |
- 225 g. chick peas, soaked overnight and
drained
- 1 liter water
- 1\2 level tsp.
bicarbonate of soda
- 1\4 cup oil
- 2 medium onions,
skinned and finely chopped
- 1 inch piece fresh
ginger, peeled and finely chop
- 1 level tsp. chili
powder
- 1\2 level tsp. ground
turmeric
- 1\2 level tsp. ground
coriander
- 1 level tsp. salt
- 1 level tsp. garam
masala
- 2-3 tbsp. finely chopped fresh coriander
leaves
Put the chick peas in a large heavy-based
saucepan, add the water and the bicarbonate of soda and
bring to boil. Stir any froth that may form back into the
chick peas. Cover the pan and boil the chick peas for about
2 hours until they are tender but still retain their shape.
This process can be speeded up in a pressure cooker. Use
half the quantity of water. (Follow the manufacturer's
instructions for timing.) Once the chick peas have become
tender keep them in the boiled water. It will be used at a
later stage.
2. Heat the oil in a large frying pan. Add the finely
chopped onions, ginger and green chili. Stirring frequently,
fry the mixture for 10-15 minutes until well browned. Add
the chili powder, turmeric, ground coriander, salt and 3-4
tablespoons water . Stir fry for another few minutes.
3. Pour the cooked chick peas and liquid into the onion
mixture. Stir well to mix all the ingredients and cover with
a lid. Reduce the heat and simmer for 20-25 minutes or until
the chick peas have absorbed the sauce. Mash a few of the
chick peas with the back of a wooden spoon against the
side of the pan to thicken the sauce.
4. Transfer the chick peas to a serving dish, sprinkle with
the garam masala and the finely chopped fresh coriander
leaves and serve hot with
chapati
or
nan.

Home computer injuries are
rife

|
Home computer-related injuries have increased
more than sevenfold, with children hurt most often,
data reveal
Over
78,000 patients were treated for such injuries in US
hospitals between 1994 and 2006, and 93% of the
trips, bumps and falls occurred in the home.
Over the 13-year study period the injury rate
increased by 732%, which is more than double the
increase in household computer ownership. The
findings appear in the American Journal of
Preventive Medicine. Children under five had the
highest injury rate, mainly due to falls after
tripping over cables or head injuries from falling
monitors.
Similarly, in the UK computer-related accidents in
the home sharply increased from around 800 in 1995
to more than 1,800 in 1999 and 2,100 in 2002 - the
latest figures available.
A third of the incidents in 2002 involved a child
under the age of 15, according to the Royal Society
for the Prevention of Accidents (Rospa).
Although most result in minor bumps and bruises,
some injuries can be more serious. One case in 1998
involved a six-year-old boy who was burned by a fire
caused by spilling a drink on a computer.
Avoidable
Lead researcher of the US study, Dr Lara
McKenzie of the Nationwide Children's Hospital
Center for Injury Research and Policy in Columbus,
said: "Future research on acute computer-related
injuries is needed as this ubiquitous product
becomes more intertwined in our everyday lives."
She said more information was needed on the types of
computers and equipment used, the layout of these
systems, and the furniture used to store them in
order to develop household-safety practices in this
area. "Given the large increase in acute
computer-related injuries over the study period,
greater efforts are needed to prevent such injuries,
especially among young children."
A Rospa spokesman said: "Whenever a piece of
equipment or activity such as home-computing becomes
more popular, the number of people being injured in
related accidents does tend to increase. "In fact,
we noticed a particular rise in computer-related
home accidents towards the end of the 1990s as
computers became 'must have' items.
"Accidents always happen more easily when you're
rushing, so if you're carrying a computer do take
care to look where you're going and don't try to
lift too much equipment in one go. "Make sure
computers are well-positioned so they cannot be
pulled over by inquisitive children. And, as with
all types of electrical equipment, watch out for
trailing cables."

Captain Bilal Zafar
Shaheed

“Think not of those
who are slain in
Allah’s way as dead.
Nay, they live,
finding their
sustenance in the
presence of their
Lord; They rejoice
in the bounty
provided by Allah.
And with regard to
those left behind,
who have not yet
joined them (in
their bliss), the
(martyr’s) glory in
the fact that on
them is no fear, nor
have they (cause to)
grieve.”
Al-Quran (3:
169-170)
Captain Bilal Zafar,
a commando of the
Pakistan army
SSG (the
world’s best elite
force), embraced
martyrdom on the
17th of May, 2009 -
fighting terrorists
and militants in the
embattled valley of
Swat.
He always used to
say “Bullets
can’t harm me”,
and
thus it proved true.
He was hit on the
arm by a bullet but
he carried on until
he was hit by an RPG
(Rocket
propelled grenade)
where he embraced
martyrdom on the
spot.
His last message has
been circulated
widely on print and
electronic media.
This is what he had
to say:
“In the volleys of
fire…in the thunder
of bombs, there are
a few who just do
not stop…knowing
that they are
surrounded by
death…knowing that
they could leave
their wives widows
and children
orphans…but they
just keep on moving
because something is
pumping in their
hearts…and flowing
through their veins
known as honour,
devotion and
motivation…death
over surrender…that
is why they say
death before
disgrace…Pakistan
Army Zindabad”.
We salute your
courage. This
sacrifice of your’s
for this nation will
never be forgotten.
At least not by us:
the people of
Pakistan. Let this
martyrdom also
dispel the notion
that the army lacks
any motivation to
defeat these
extremist militants,
it is obvious that
their spirits are
very high.
We stand by you!
Long Live Pakistan!

Optimism
Assalam-O-Alaikum
Wise say ‘Life is not a bed of roses’. It means that
everyone, in their lives, for whatever reason, will face
things that just don't make sense to them. For whatever
reason, there will be times when the tide would seem to be
flowing against us. Most of us find it difficult to deal
with the brickbats life throw at us.
My grandfather say, “Through my life’s experience I have
found that in every challenge and obstacle that we are faced
with there CAN be good that can come from it.” Last week,
we traveled to Taif’s tourist resort, Shafa. On our way
back, it started to rain so heavily that we had to take a
stop. I felt so bad about it because I had load of home
chores to complete that weekend. However, when the rain
stopped, a beautiful rainbow appeared and our journey back
became even more pleasant. At that time I reflected on what
grandfather had said, and now I do see how true this is. I
can complain of the rainy weather or be thankful that the
plants are getting watered for free. We can lament on why
roses have thorns or be happy about thorns having roses.
Our religion instructs us to thank Allah for His countless
blessings. Often we tend to focus on what we don’t have. If
we count what we have, they far out number what we don’t
have. By reminding ourselves to show gratitude to Allah, it
is unlikely for us to feel depress because our attention
will be towards the good things in our life. It is
impossible to feel grateful and depressed in the same
moment.
The key to contentment in life is by spending time looking
for positives in your life. Just be appreciative and
thankful, and you won't be depressed. It is you who get to
choose how to spend your day and hence your life. Today you
can complain because you have to go to school, or you can
celebrate the joy in getting the opportunity to fill your
mind with more knowledge. So what will be your approach?
Till next time, Allah Hafiz
