-1 tsp. chili powder
- 2 tbsp. ghee
-
Ghee or butter
for shallow frying

Depression is a common mental illness which is
estimated to affect up to one in five Britons at
some point in their lifetime and to cost the UK
about £8bn a year in medication, benefits and lost
working days.
It can
strike at any age and the feelings of hopelessness
and helplessness attached to it can make it
difficult for people to carry out their normal
activities.
It can be more or
less severe and
symptoms are often varied, making it often hard to
diagnose.
It is thought that some individuals may be more
prone to depression, whether because of life
experiences, their body chemistry or genetically
inherited conditions.
Those who have suffered from depression include Sir
Winston Churchill and Florence Nightingale.
What is depression?
Anyone
can suffer from depression. The most common symptoms
include:
-
Feelings of helplessness and hopelessness
-
Feeling useless, inadequate,
bad
-
A sense of
self hatred, constant questioning of thoughts
and actions and a constant need for reassurance
-
Feeling
vulnerable and being oversensitive to criticism
-
Sense of
guilt
-
Loss of
energy and the ability to concentrate and be
motivated to do even the simplest tasks
-
Harming
oneself
-
Sudden loss
or gain in weight
-
Sleep
disruption or a need to sleep very long hours
-
Agitation and
restlessness
-
Loss of
libido
-
Physical
aches and pains
Most people only
suffer two or three of these symptoms at any one
time. People with severe depression may also
experience suicidal feelings, stop eating or
drinking and suffer from delusions or
hallucinations. Many people who need treatment for
depression suffer further bouts later in life. Women
are twice as likely to suffer from depression, but
three times as many men commit suicide. Experts say
this could be because women are more likely to admit
to depression because of the stigma attached to
mental illness.
Different types of depression There are many
different types of depression, including clinically
diagnosed depression, manic depression and
post-natal depression. Manic depression is marked by
extreme mood swings, between highs when a person
experiences excessive energy and optimism and lows
when they may feel total despair and lack of energy.
It is often treated with lithium or, in extreme
cases, electro-convulsive therapy. Post-natal
depression can occur from about two weeks after the
birth of a child to two years after and differs from
the mood swings suffered by many in the first few
days after the child is born. Other forms of
depression include Seasonal Affective Disorder which
is thought to be associated with the approach of
winter and may be linked to lack of sunlight.
Causes of depression Depression can be caused by
a combination of factors. It often runs in families,
suggesting a genetic component, but it may be
triggered by stressful events. Major depressive
illness is usually linked to some form of chemical
imbalance in the brain.
It is also thought that people with low self-esteem,
a pessimistic outloook on life and difficulty coping
with stress are more prone to depression. Life
events which may trigger depression include
bereavement, chronic illness, relationship problems
and financial difficulties.
Treatment
In recent years, the market has been saturated by a
range of new drugs called anti-depressants. These
include Prozac which is thought to stimulate the
growth of brain cells in an area of the brain called
the dentate gyrus. Other types of drugs may also be
used to treat depression.
Many positive claims have been made for
anti-depressants, but some patients experience bad
side effects.
Other ways of treating depression include
psychotherapy, which aims to uncover the reasons for
depression and help the patient to find ways of
overcoming them. Self help groups may also offer
people a forum for talking about their condition and
sharing it with others so that they do not feel
isolated and alone. In extreme cases, a person with
depression may need to be treated in hospital, for
example, if they are threatening or have attempted
to commit suicide. If the person is deemed a risk to
himself or others, he may have to be committed to
hospital.
Besides psychotherapy and a course of anti-psychotic
drugs, people in hospital may be offered or forced
to undergo electro-convulsive therapy.
This involves applying electric currents to the
brain. The treatment is controversial, but safety
procedures have been improved in recent years.
Some
psychiatrists are against its use, particularly
without the patient's consent, but others believe it
can be effective in dealing with life-threatening
depression.

PME
rejects claims of high temperature
|
JEDDAH – The
Presidency of Meteorology and Environment (PME)
on Wednesday said reports in a section of the
press forecasting higher temperatures in some
regions during the coming months are inaccurate.
Last week, media reports quoted researchers as
saying that there are prospects of high
temperatures in some areas, especially in the
central and eastern regions to rise to 60
degrees centigrade.
In its statement, the PME referred to
meteorological studies and statistics of the
climatic records of 1970 to 2009.
“There is no indication whatsoever for the Saudi
regions in general and the areas specifically
mentioned in this context, to be affected by
temperatures higher than the rate recorded over
the past years,” the statement said.
“The highest temperatures recorded in some of
the governorates in the eastern region were 50
to 51 degrees in 2000 and 49 degrees in Riyadh,
50 degrees recorded in Makkah in 1989 and 50
degrees in Madinah in 1973,” the statement said.
The PME pointed out that the air temperatures
are recorded in the shade according to
measurements of the World Meteorological
Organization, and “this is the temperature that
is usually announced in the bulletins of local
and global observations through various media
organs.”
The PME also urged all citizens and media organs
to refer to the PME specialists for reliable
information. – SPA |

Refrigerated
Beach in Dubai
Versace, the
renowned fashion house, is to create the
world’s first refrigerated beach so that
hotel guests can walk comfortably across the
sand on scorching days.
The beach will be next to the the new
Palazzo Versace hotel which is being built
in Dubai where summer temperatures average
40C and can reach 50C. The beach will have a
network of pipes beneath the sand containing
a coolant that will absorb heat from the
surface. The swimming pool will be
refrigerated and there are also proposals to
install giant blowers to waft a gentle
breeze over the beach.
Soheil Abedian, founder and president of
Palazzo Versace, said he believed it is
possible to design a refrigerated beach and
make it sustainable. “We will suck the heat
out of the sand to keep it cool enough to
lie on,” he said. “This is the kind of
luxury that top people want.”
Hyder Consulting, a British construction
consultancy, is overseeing the engineering
on the project. The hotel will be marketed
strongly in the UK where Dubai is a popular
tourist destination, attracting about
800,000 Britons a year. Abedian’s firm began
its association with Versace a decade ago
with the idea of creating the first chain of
luxury fashion-branded lifestyle resorts.
The first Palazzo Versace is already
operating on Australia’s Gold Coast – where
Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey, the
actors, have stayed – and the Dubai hotel
will be the second when it opens late next
year or early 2010. The 10-storey hotel will
have 213 rooms, several with their own
internal swimming pools, plus 169
apartments. Fifteen more such hotels are
planned.
Competition to serve the world’s rich is
getting intense, especially in Dubai. The
city already boasts the world’s first
seven-star hotel, the Burj Al Arab, while
Armani, a competitor with Versace, is
building a similarly branded Dubai hotel.
The refrigerated beach is designed to give
Versace the edge in this battle of luxury
lifestyles. The system will be controlled by
thermostats linked to computers. Versace’s
plans have shocked environmentalists.
Rachel Noble, the campaigns officer at
Tourism Concern, which promotes sustainable
tourism, said that the carbon generated by
such projects would contribute to climate
change, whose worst effects would be felt by
the poor. “Dubai is like a bubble world
where the things that are worrying the rest
of the world, like climate change, are
simply ignored so that people can continue
their destructive lifestyles,” she said.
Aided by cheap oil and gas, Middle Eastern
nations have poured enormous resources into
controlling temperature. About 60% of
Dubai’s huge power bill is for
air-conditioning; each person living there
has a carbon footprint of more than 44 tons
of CO2 a year.

Fulfilling
Our Duty
Assalam-O-Alaikum
Hope you all are well under the summer’s smoldering sun!
I wonder how many of you had chance to travel to the
northern areas of Pakistan. The scenic beauty is
incomparable. Moreover, the people of those regions are so
hospitable. They welcome you with such open heart and will
do their utmost to serve you because honoring the guests is
part of their culture. The wonderful weather, the nature and
the loving people make it look like heaven on earth.
It is sad to see the adverse conditions these places are
nowadays facing due to which the inhabitants had to move out
of these areas. Folks, it is our duty now to help these
internally displaced people-IDPs. They have always happily
offered, whatever they could, to the tourists coming to
their homeland. Now it’s our turn.
The world is facing economic crunch. Money is scarcer this
year for everyone. In such conditions, many quit
contributing to charity. When you have plenty, it is easier
to give away some extra cash. But it is indeed the critical
times when one must get more watchful of cutting down
useless expenditures and think of contributing more to
charity. It is now time to spend on others. Without our
help, the humanitarian organizations won't have enough
resources.
Vacations are approaching when most of us tend to spend
extra bucks on luxuries. However, the need of the hour is
that we consciously think about helping those in need. We
must make sure that we think of others and reach out to help
them. We really don't need a lot for ourselves. Most of us
belong to such fortunate family where every member has
clothes and entertainment and food, not to forget a
comfortable bed to sleep in. We have too much, actually. We
have and do spend alot on our own loved ones. Now it is time
to get gifts for those whom we don’t know. The people of
Swat left everything behind. Their children could not bring
their toys, their books, their clothes with them. Just
imagine their plight. They have to sit in their tents all
day with nothing to read, no toy to play with. What big deal
if instead of stuffing our toys carton, we spend our pocket
money in buying gifts for these children. Take out time to
sort your story books to parcel to your friends of Swat..
Before you've spent it all on your own loved ones, now spend
a little on the IDPs. Allah will bless you. Ameen.
Ms. Amna
