Woman in pain

A hysterectomy is a major surgical procedure. It always involves removal of the uterus, but can also include the removal of other parts of the genital tract.

Are there different types of hysterectomy?
Yes. A total hysterectomy is the most common operation and this means removal of the uterus and cervix (neck of the womb).
A sub-total hysterectomy means the removal of the body of the uterus, leaving the cervix behind.
A radical hysterectomy involves the removal of the uterus, cervix, a small portion of the upper part of the vagina and some soft tissue from within the pelvis.

Why is it carried out?
A hysterectomy can help to ease many gynaecological complaints. These include:

  • Heavy or very painful periods
  • Fibroids: Swellings of abnormal muscle that grow in the uterus, and can cause heavy or painful periods, or problems with urination.
  • Prolapse: Where the uterus, or parts of the vaginal wall, drops down.
  • Endometriosis: A condition where the cells which line the uterus are found outside the uterus in the pelvis. This can cause scarring around the uterus, and may cause the bladder or rectum to 'stick' to the uterus or fallopian tubes.
  • Various forms of cancer, including cancer of the cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes, or ovaries.

In most cases - except for cancer - the procedure is usually only used as a last resort.

How is the operation carried out?
The most common method is to cut through the lower abdomen, usually leaving a six-inch scar.
However, doctors may opt in some instances to remove the uterus through the vagina.

Are there any risks?
No operation is risk-free, especially surgery as major as a hysterectomy.

However, the vast majority of women undergo the procedure without any complications.
Obesity can make surgery more tricky, and increase the risk of post-operative complications, such as heavy bleeding.
There is also a small risk of damage to the bladder, or the tubes that carry urine from the kidneys to the bladder.
An uncommon - but serious - complication is the development of a blood clot in the veins of the leg.

Is it a common procedure?
Up to one in five women will undergo a hysterectomy during their lifetime so it is a relatively common operation.
Over 40,000 hysterectomies were carried out in the UK in 2004/2005.

Engr.Professor Anwar Chowdhry Sahib
of NED University Of Engineering & Technology Karachi
passed away on Monday, June 21, 2010, in Karachi,  Pakistan. He was 87 years old.
Inna Lillah Wa Inna Elaih Rajeon!

Chowdhry Sahib was once  Chairman of The Institution of Engineers Pakistan Karachi Centre and was a very active and popular member of this Institution.  Pakistan lost an influential boxing personality on Saturday when former president of the International Boxing Association (AIBA)  Prof. Engr. Anwar Chowdhry Sahib passed away.
The country witnessed a brilliant boxing era under Chowdhry Sahib by winning the solitary Olympic medal at 1988 Seoul Games when middleweight Hussain Shah won the bronze. Pakistan also grabbed other laurels during his tenure as Pakistan Boxing Federation (PBF) chief, winning Asian Games, Asian championship and South Asian Federation Games (now South Asian Games) and assorted titles.
An engineer by profession and a professor at NED University, Chowdhry Sahib later on developed an affection for boxing and became the president of the national federation to rule the sport’s affairs with an iron hand for no less than 40 years.
The 87-year-old Pakistani first entered into AIBA domain in 1966 as vice-president before being elected secretary-general in 1974, and later elected the president of the international body in 1986.
Since his youth, Prof. Khurshid Anwar Chowdhry Sahib has been closely involved with sports in general and boxing in particular. In addition to being elected President of the International Amateur Boxing Association for three consecutive terms, Prof. Khurshid Anwar Chowdhry Sahib holds prominent offices and memberships in the world's leading sports organizations. In 1998 Seoul Olympics, Boxing came under strong clouds when Mr. Juan Antonio Samaranch, President, International Olympic Committee announced that the future of Boxing as a Olympic Sports would be reviewed because of its defective scoring system. Prof. Khurshid Anwar Chowdhry Sahib being the President of AIBA and an Engineer by profession devoted two years and after intensive research invented Computerized Scoring System which is an integral part of the International Boxing Scoring System.

Water - And Pakistan!!

The Facts
The mortality rate for children under-five in Pakistan is 101 deaths per 1000 children. Water and sanitation related diseases are responsible for 60% of the total number of child mortality cases in Pakistan, with diarrheal diseases estimated at killing over 200,000 under-five years' children, every year. The combination of unsafe water consumption and poor hygiene practices causes hardship due to resultant high costing treatments for water borne illnesses, decreased working days, and also contributes to lowering of educational achievement due to reduced school attendance by children.
At Contact Pakistan we take water issue in Pakistan very seriously. We will be brining you in future issues more information about Water and what is the fate of Pakistan and our generations to come if some swift actions are not taken ASAP.
By 2025 we may not have enough water even to drink leaving aside impact on our agriculture which may bring droughts and epidemics that could kill millions, cause unrest in the society and make Pakistan more venerable to outside intervention. We as Pakistani have to play our role for the safety of our generations to come!!!

Life is Triple X

Few of our readers might be half through their vacations while for some the holidays are yet to start. But for all my folks out there, I would advise you not to waste time, and acquire some skill to increase your worth.
Sometimes back I came across this pithy statement: “Life is ‘XXX’. Past is eXperience, Present is eXperiment. Future is eXpectation.”  How beautifully this sentence summarizes the philosophy of life.
Dictionary defines experience as a particular instance of personally encountering or undergoing something. It refers to knowledge or practical wisdom gained from what has been observed, encountered or undergone. What is past but a collection of our experiences. Wise always take lessons from their experience so as not to repeat their mistakes. Some of past experiences maybe bitter while some may have delightful ones. No matter how it was, move on because you can’t drive forward on the road of life if you are looking in the rear view mirror.
Experiment is a test or a procedure carried out for the purpose of testing a principle or a supposition. Present is like an experiment. It is a trial through which we shall go through keeping in mind the wisdom that has been learnt from past experiences.
Future refers to time that has yet to come. We all have dreams that we want fulfilled in coming time. Future is a set of expectations. To meet those expectations one must utilize his gained wisdom. The past is there to look back at our mistakes. The future is there to make sure you don’t make the same ones. The sensible ones learn from their past since it is gone, they live in their present and prepare for the future that is ahead.
So friends, lesson for today is to use your experience in your experiments to achieve your expectations.

Till we meet next, Allah hafiz.
Wa-alikum-us- salam
