Kashmir
Solidarity Day has been observed on 5 February each year
since 1990 in Pakistan as
a day of protest against Indian control
of part of Kashmir.
It is a national holiday in Pakistan.
The current uprising against the Indian occupation of
Kashmir began in 1989 and in view of the popularity of this
indigenous uprising the Benazir Bhutto government of the
time made it official and declared this a public holiday in
1990. Ever since this declaration, each year February 5 is
observed as Kashmir Solidarity Day, by Pakistanis throughout
Pakistan and abroad.
Pakistan considers Kashmir as the core issue,
between India and Pakistan. This remains a flash point
between the two neighbors and has also lead to three wars
between them. The World leaders have stressed the need to
resolve the Kashmir dispute between India and Pakistan to
avoid an eventuality that may cause a catastrophe in the
region.
The Pakistani community in Riyadh, and for
that matter throughout Saudi Arabia, has been fervently
participating in programs marking the Kashmir Solidarity Day
each year, hosted under the aegis of the Embassy of Pakistan
in Riyadh.
This year too Embassy of Pakistan under the
leadership of its Defense Attaché – Brig. Hassan Jalil Shah
- is gearing up to host the Kashmir Solidarity Day-2011
program. As a warming up, Brig. Hassan formed a Steering
Committee to oversee the Kashmir Solidarity Day program that
has been scheduled to be hosted this year (2011) on Friday,
4th of February at 03:30 PM. The Steering Committee
includes: Brig Hassan Jalil Shah (Chair) and other members
as: Mohammad Asghar Qureshi, Muhammad Riaz Rathore, Faiz Al-Najdi,
